Hiking Meetup Group
The first hike of 2009 for the Journeys'
Hiking Meetup Group will be to an almost
secret location of the Eno River State Park
in the Western Section of the park--a rock
quarry that has slowly filled over the years
to become a small pond and swimming hole. It
might be a little nippy just yet to go
swimming, but the trip out to the quarry
will offer the opportunity for wildlife viewing
because of the proximity to the water and
relative seclusion.
The group will be meeting at 11:45 am on Saturday, March 7 in the parking lot
of the Eno River State Park Western Section
and we
should hike for an hour or so. (See directions below.)
Please note there are NO, repeat, NO restrooms or other facilities at this location. Bring whatever snacks/hydration you'll need plus shoes that you don't mind getting dirty/muddy/wet. There is a small stream to cross by stepping stones at one point on the hike.
These directions are from Raleigh to Durham. Please email Robert Cantrell at the email address below if you need directions to the park from another location:
- Travel west on I-40 towards Durham. Exit at the Chapel Hill 15-501 exit # 270.
- Turn RIGHT at the end of the off ramp.
- Travel north towards Durham on 15-501( Durham/Chapel Hill Blvd.) There is construction on this stretch, so keep on your toes through the next bit.
- As you approach Durham, you'll see that the road splits into a "15-501 business" and a " 15-501 bypass" fork.
- Take the "15-501 bypass" section, keeping to the right. There are two right lanes dedicated to the "15-501 bypass".
- Exit at 751/Cameron Blvd, Exit 107. Turn LEFT at the bottom of this ramp. Follow straight through the roundabout (are we in England?) and continue through Duke Research Forest.
- 751 T-bones into US 70/Hillsborough Rd.
- Turn RIGHT onto US 70/Hillsborough Rd. Follow until you arrive at the intersection with Sparger Rd.
- Turn LEFT onto Sparger Rd.
- Follow Sparger Rd. across the I-40 overpass and make the first LEFT after crossing the highway, onto Howe St.
- Continue to the end of Howe St.
- Parking lot for the hike is on the left.
There's great cell reception in the park, so if you're running late, get lost or for whatever reason need to ring, Robert's cell phone number is 919-724-6245.
